Sonshine Club
Details about the Sonshine Club
The Sonshine Club charity was set up to help improve the education, health and well-being of children within the communities of Hackney and Haringey by providing access to a number of well designed recreational, educational and healthy lifestyle activities regardless of health, financial or social status of the children. All activities are held within safe environments and overseen by qualified, responsible staff.
Details of the Project
This is a trial project, made possible by our funding. ‘Act It’ – an inspiring afterschool drama club designed especially for 24 struggling girls from low-income households who face disability and other unique challenges. Prospective participants are challenged with various disabilities and struggle with core skills including social and communication skills and their disabilities preclude them from joining in regular extra-curricular activities, which means they often feel isolated and excluded. These children long for the chance to develop friendships and experience the sense of belonging that comes from being productive with others.
These girls will be grouped into three teams of eight, with each group attending weekly sessions over an exciting eight-week period. Each session will be bursting with energy and creativity, featuring drama games, improvisation and immersive storytelling – all thoughtfully adapted to suit the needs and abilities of every participant. Sessions will be led by a passionate, highly experience drama coach and a dedicated assistant, who truly understand the hurdles the girls struggle to overcome every day. A special drama performance will be performed at the end of the project for family and friends to enjoy.
