Details of the Project

Girls in the BAME community are growing up in homes marked by financial pressure, overcrowding and parents working long hours.  Over half of girls surveyed said they do not feel good about their body and two-thirds do not know how to make healthy choices.  80% also report doing almost no physical activity outside school PE due to embarrassment, modesty concerns and fear of judgement.  Without early intervention these patterns lead to poor mental health, obesity, low self-esteem and lifelong inequality.

The Girls Got Taste and Girls Got Haste project is a combined programme supporting girls aged 8 to 16 in North London who face food insecurity, body anxiety and withdrawal from physical activity.  The programme will deliver weekly nutrition education, hands-on cooking and shared meals, teaching budgeting, food literacy and emotional well-being around eating. Girls Got Haste provides female-only movement through walking/running groups, dance fitness and holiday trampolining, designed to be non-competitive and culturally sensitive.  Together the projects create safe spaces where girls build confidence, practical life skills and healthier relationships with their bodies at a critical early stage of adolescence.
