Becontree Primary School is in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, which is considered an area of deprivation with one of the highest poverty rates in London. The school has 472 pupils on roll, 26.4% of pupils are eligible for free school meals.

Details of the Project

We are delighted to be able to support the school with two projects. Firstly, we are funding the purchase of a new team kit for a newly formed netball team. The team recently attended a tournament without a kit and this will make an enormous difference to the team, who will be able to represent their school with pride. Secondly, we will be funding personal care workshops and providing hygiene products for 100 disadvantaged girls in Year 4, 5 & 6. We look forward to working with the Headteacher Mrs Marie Ziane to deliver on these projects over the coming few months.

Delivery of the Project
On Wednesday 2nd July, we were delighted to attend the school to deliver the personal care kits to support the school’s delivery of their puberty programme, ensuring that all students would be prepared for puberty and the changes that will occur. As many of the families are from disadvantaged backgrounds, we are confident that the Trust’s support will make a huge difference. The hygiene packs contained period pants, sanitary pads, hair brush, shower gel, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner. Items such as period pants will offer girls a more sustainable product and save money in the longer term. By delivering this project, girls will now have access to a number of essential hygiene products to support their journey. Improved self-esteem and confidence will help the girls to embrace these changes, and provide an increased awareness of and contribution to a more sustainable future.

Impact & Outcome of the Project
This project has reached 100 girls and allowed them to access education, information and vital hygiene products. The girls across Year 5 and 6 who received the hygiene packs were ‘buzzing with excitement.’ They now all have an increased understanding of taking care of their own hygiene and managing their periods. They have some products to help financially tight households as well.

The netball team girls were truly grateful for their new netball kit. The impact of this was improved self-worth, a sense of pride to represent the school, and to be the best players in the competitions.
